ABOUT MARIA
Maria Giovanetti is an accomplished and versatile soprano who endeavors to bring classical music to a broad audience, making it accessible and engaging for all. Her artistic ambition is to connect with audiences, bringing the human experience to life through the art of storytelling.
Maria is currently engaged with the Berkshire Opera Festival, singing in the chorus of their summer 2024 production of Gounod’s Faust. Last fall, Maria was honored with the Helen Boatwright first place award from the Civic Morning Musicals Vocal Competition in Syracuse, NY. She was also a finalist in the Mendelssohn Club of Albany’s Dolven Vocal Awards.
Maria received her Master’s degree in Vocal Arts from the Graduate Vocal Arts Program at Bard College Conservatory, under the tutelage of Kayo Iwama, Erika Switzer, Richard Cox, and Stephanie Blythe. While at Bard, Maria sang the role of Phyllis in Gilbert and Sullivan’s Iolanthe as well as the roles of Cricket and Frantík in Janáček’s The Cunning Little Vixen. She performed as a soprano soloist in Handel’s Messiah and appeared in both an evening of French and German cabaret, in addition to singing the live premiere of a new work by Aaron Kernis with the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research in NYC. Maria presented her graduate degree recital, Spectrum of Her, a program consisting of all female composers which aimed to explore and amplify the voices and experiences of women.
Originally from Denver, Colorado, Maria completed her undergraduate degree in vocal performance at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, MA, where she studied with Carole Haber. She also holds a Performance Certificate from the Lamont School of Music at the University of Denver, where she studied with Catherine Kasch. During her time in Denver, she sang excerpts from Rusalka with the Lamont Opera Theatre in addition to learning the roles of Papagena in Die Zauberflöte and Laetitia in The Old Maid and the Thief. Maria also appeared as a soloist with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra, singing excerpts from Messiah.
Maria has performed and curated a variety of recitals, and loves to explore new repertoire. She also enjoys programming community performances. Throughout her undergraduate studies, Maria brought vocal recitals to schools, nursing homes, churches, libraries, and hospitals around the Greater Boston area through a program called Community Performances and Partnerships. She loves to share her voice with the community, always aiming to captivate and tell stories. She feels that this gives her the opportunity to perform repertoire that she loves, while sharing her passion with people who otherwise may not be exposed to this art form.
In 2019, Maria competed in the NATS Boston Chapter vocal competition and took first place in the Upper Classical division. In 2020, she was a finalist in the NATS West Central Chapter Advanced Classical division. Maria has participated in several training programs, including Opera Steamboat’s young artist program, as well as the American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, Austria.
Maria is based in the Hudson Valley, NY. She enjoys cooking and baking, spending time with her partner and their 3 year old chihuahua/terrier, and maintaining her active voice studio at the Rhinebeck School of Music in Rhinebeck, NY.
